National Caffeine Awareness Month Begins in March
New York, NY – (March 1, 2005) The governors of 3 states along with the mayors of 10 cities have all signed proclamations declaring the month of March as National Caffeine Awareness Month to call attention to the dangers of caffeine dependency and intoxication.
They all agree that prolonged caffeine consumption can pose a significant hazard to health and longevity.
“For the first time, a group of states and cities have finally recognized the health risk associated this ubiquitous drug” says Marina Kushner, founder of the Caffeine Awareness Alliance, a non-profit organization, which sponsors the event. “Caffeine-induced stress can produce mood swings and insomnia, increased muscle tension, impair digestion and nutrition, restrict blood circulation to the brain, raise blood pressure and accelerate the heart rate.”
The 3 states are Nebraska, New Jersey and Wisconsin. The 10 cities are Brentwood California, Chino California, Gainesville Georgia, Ormond Beach Florida, Redmond Washington, Salt Lake City Utah, Santa Cruz California, Tulsa Oklahoma, Washington D.C. and Wassau Wisconsin. A certificate of appreciation was signed by the City of Los Angeles supporting the Caffeine Awareness Alliance efforts. Other states and cities are expected to issue similar proclamations in the next few weeks.
Ms. Kushner said it’s been gaining support from the medical community as they are helping sponsor “wellness fairs” to help educate their patients and introduce them to healthy alternatives.
Governors of the 3 states have stated:
Physical and Mental health care is immeasurably important to the overall well-being of its citizens.
There are factors which are known to reduce the risk for caffeine intoxication and play an important role in prevention.
Caffeine Awareness Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the dangers of caffeine intoxication and dependency.
In addition, governors from the 3 states called upon all citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses and schools to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of caffeine addiction and to support those who are trying to reduce or eliminate caffeine consumption.
“Governors who make the effort to get the word out can make a really big difference in the health of its citizens in their states,” Ms. Kushner said. “The media will take notice which helps to raise the level of awareness. After all, most of them are probably caffeine addicts themselves.”
Kushner has written a book which describes in detail the destructive nature of the drug. It’s called The Truth About Caffeine “Since the Food and Drug Administration does not require manufacturers of caffeinated products to indicate on their labels the exact amount of caffeine contained, I wrote the book to provide as a resource for consumers to make informed choices.”
This is the third year for the event which takes place all month long. “We are hoping that President Bush will join us by issuing his own proclamation,” said Kushner, “and we are grateful to have many supporters in the medical community who share the same ideas we have.”
